This time, Inamori* spoke about the above motto in Kyocera philosophy.

What Inamori said is quoted with “”.

“ You must maintain your desire with a purified mind. In case your desire comes from your egoism, even though you achieve the short-term goal, over the long term, you would never keep the prosperity. Fundamentally, your egoistic desire naturally conflicts with public benefit and over the long term that leads you to failure.

The desire which is embedded into your subliminal mind should be completely purified. You must pay attention to the quality of your desire. As long as you hold such a noble desire, your dream will sooner or later come true. ”

This motto is quite important but is also hard for us, ordinary people, to conduct on a daily basis.

Thus, I would like to propose the following three approaches to develop such desire in our minds.

1. Quality: measure the quality of our desire.

2. Dark side of our mind: highlight where our egoism comes from

3. Extension: how far your desire to influence to others

Let me explain one by one

1. Quality: measure the quality of our desire.

“ As demonstrated in the mantra, Buddha said that all the facts you have seen in your life are the reflection of your desires. The wishes you never thought would never be realized. I believe it’s true, but nothing is so difficult to prove. I’m sure everyone is skeptical that simply holding the desire with a so-called purified mind leads each company to grow.

In reality, things rarely go as planned, and I’m sure you’ve often seen cases where companies run by egoistic leaders actually perform well. Thus, as to the corporate management, even if you are told that the results will be exactly as you envisioned, you simply cannot accept them. ”

→ The story reminded me of Dr. Tetsu Nakamura, who was dispatched to Afghanistan as a doctor and eventually developed irrigation systems in the deserts. As a doctor, he desired simply to save people’s lives and it was finally realized. Among patients who came to Dr. Nakamura, babies and small children were dying one after another, all because of poor quality drinking water.

He wanted to bring safe water not only to local people but also to farmland. Even if he was finally left alone due to the war, he worked diligently to build irrigation facilities to benefit local people. As a result, large rivers and creeks have flown through the deserts. We must ask ourselves: whether or not we have pure, altruistic aspirations as did Dr. Nakamura . We should ask ourselves if we work selflessly or not. I want to keep asking myself these questions.

2. Dark side of our mind: highlight where our egoism come from

“ Even if you work hard to defeat others or to hold back your peers, your strong desire would make your company well developed, simply because you devote yourself to the management. Greediness and selfish attitude may be able to bring you temporary success, but it never lasts so long. You can’t remain in a winning position. ”

→ Some people are greedy enough not to share profits with others. Looking at those people, we may be able to find the background why they become so selfish. Sometimes those people experienced lack of love or affections from their beloved ones, parents or siblings. They believe they were neglected or left alone and therefore they unintentionally satisfy them with materials instead of love that they believe was supposed to give them.

Some people say that money and love are interchangeable, each one has the similar energy that drives people. Therefore, people who are hungry for love are also hungry for money, and unconsciously they try to fill their deficits with money.

The prescription for this symptom is to cure their mental. We must be aware of our emotional conditions and cure ourselves through the internal conversation with our emotions and analysis of our pains. Those approaches work to raise negative emotions which had subliminally been driving our actions and to expose them under conscious layers. This ultimately works to change the world which we belong to.

Above approach will allow you to look at your own mind objectively. By admitting your unfulfilled heart, your heart would gradually be fulfilled. This will weaken your attachment to money and materials. I myself will keep taking care of my mind in by this approach.

3. Extension: how far your desire to influence others

” If the company’s performance gets worse, the employees who are working hard and devoting themselves to the growth of the company will be in trouble. Leaders must make the maximum efforts to prevent this tragedy.

I believe that the desire to make the company great to maintain the employments must be realized over the long term, as it comes from unselfish motivation. ”

→ Under the matter of survival, people can demonstrate unexpected capabilities. However, once people realize that they can live in peace, they get used to being in a relaxed mood, never be put under the risks, and it’s unlikely for them to show such excellent capabilities. If you are a business owner and think that you have enough assets to support the rest of your life, you would never get incentivized to challenge or work harder. Then, unconsciously, you put on the brakes, thinking that you don’t need to hassle or push yourself harder.

This may be the situation in Japan today. Look, now that we have grown to the second or third largest GDP in the world, we don’t have to make any effort to become a more powerful country. We just work to maintain the status quo. If this is the case, future leaders must have the skills to encourage the Japanese people to work harder and encourage progress and development.

I think it is the role of a leader to demonstrate things like interests, fun, challenge, and a sense of adventure. I would like to change myself greatly and find something enjoyable and very exciting.

This looks a bit tricky. Pushing your staff hard does not work. As a leader , how many interesting and exciting objectives you can share with your staff is the key for the growth of your business.

In summary, it is important to “hold your desires with a pure heart”.

To achieve this, I think it is important to consider the quality of your desires, face the darkness in your own mind that causes your selfish desires, and find ways to keep your desires strong.
