Some people said this is the total waste of their time, or other people say that working for this company seems to do nothing to their career. However, personally, I feel that there is no time to be wasted in our lives. In other words, every moment in our life has a certain meaning in our lives over the middle to long term. We have been heading to one direction, regardless of whether we believe it or not. Nathen, the CEO of a company, who invented the high-quality egg packaging machine, shared his episodes with Seiwajuku members. From his speech, I feel that the “wasted time” has the following significance.

1 Finding the corporate mission to be shared with their staff.

2 Removing our mental blocks

3 Being aware of our vocation

4 Giving positive energies to others

5 Getting others’ support

1 Finding the corporate mission to be shared with their staff.

Inamori recalled his early days in Kyocera and shared his episode. Kyoto was a city where the left-wing activists were very strong since the end of World War II. Therefore, local people’s image towards the corporate head had been bad and evil. Thus, the younger staff who had just joined Kyocera in its startup, came to Inamori’s apartment one day and asked to guarantee their salary increase. After three days of discussions with Inamori at his place, those young staff finally agreed to work for Kyocera.

Remembering those days, Inamori said, because of that staff and our corporate location, I had to deeply consider what the fundamental value of a company is and I finally set out the sublime corporate mission. I feel that Kyocera has been growing into such a wonderful company simply because we have a value oriented corporate mission. Thus, that rebellious event was significantly important to my life.

2 Removing our mental blocks

Nathen was born and raised there in Kyoto. Through his education, he believed that the employers were always vicious and squeezing employees. However, one day he found an article about Kyocera, which was described as the group of insane people. In Kyocera, all the employees were driven by a charismatic leader and working very hard as if they were insane workaholics. Nathen was very much impressed with that article and shared the same enthusiasm as did Kyocera staff. He was fascinated with the corporate culture where people are led by a leader and devoted themselves to achieve one goal. This article changed Nathen’s image towards the employers, and he started thinking of discussing businesses in person with Inamori one day.

3 Being aware of our vocation

Nathen had never thought of becoming an entrepreneur, as his image of a corporate head was really negative. He wanted to be a teacher or novelist. But he failed in the exam and he eventually started his own manufacturing factory by renting a small studio. Probably, Nathen had talents to become a business leader and he could make efforts.

However, he was not interested at all until he read the article of Kyocera. Since then, he started making efforts to be an entrepreneur like Inamori. All the events Nathen had had till he got to know Inamori have contributed to his life’s fulfillment as an entrepreneur.

Point 4-5 will be explained in the next blog.
